A state of estrangement, or a feeling of being an outsider from society. Dull, boring and repetitive work induces a feeling of alienation. Assembly-line workers are involved with a small part of the final product, have little control over the rhythm of their work and may have no idea of the significance of their contribution. Their work can appear to be alien with no relationship or meaning to their lives other than to produce income. As a consequence they may feel little enthusiasm and, often, active hostility towards what seems like forced-labour.
