Traditionally used for job applications they have tended to become little more than cover letters in English-speaking countries, generally being discounted in the selection process. However, in a number of continental European countries, especially France and Switzerland, they are requested to be handwritten and may be subject to graphological analysis as one (sometimes the main) selection procedure.
