The term glass ceiling describes the process which bars women from promotion by means of an invisible barrier. This involves a number of factors, including attitudes of people in power and the inflexible processes and requirements geared to the cloning process which ensures that ‘men of a certain type’ will generally succeed. In the USA the term is also used to describe the barrier that prevents progress for other disadvantaged groups, for example ethnic minorities.
