A form of discrimination favouring particular groups and individuals over others. It derives from a reliance on personal relationships such as ethnic origin, religion or tribal community. It contrasts with universalism in which personal relationships are ignored and emphasis is on other criteria such as qualifications, expertise and ability to do the job.
