A term coined by Alfred Müaut;ller-Armack, Secretary of State at the Economics Ministry in Bonn, Federal Republic of Germany between 1958 and 1963. He defined the social market as an economic system that combined market freedom with social equilibrium. In this kind of economic system the government plays a regulating role and creates the framework for market processes, going beyond securing competition to ensure social equity.
